RECIPE: Iced Chai Latte with Okinawan Tea Blend

RECIPE: Iced Chai Latte with Okinawan Tea Blend

Inspired by the unique flavors and ingredients of the tropical islands of Okinawa, this aromatic iced chai latte is perfect to enjoy as an alternative to iced coffee in the morning or as a refreshing pick-me-up on a hot summer afternoon.

Servings: 2

Ingredients:

● 1 cup water

● 1 cup milk of choice (almond milk highly recommended)

● 1 bag Ryukyu Flavored Okinawan Tea Blend*

● 1-inch piece fresh ginger, crushed or sliced

● ½ short cinnamon stick

● 2 whole cloves

● 1/4 whole star anise

● 2 green cardamom pods, crushed

● Sweetener of choice, to taste (maple syrup or agave works well)

Instructions:

1. In a 2-quart saucepan, add spices to 1 cup of water and bring to a boil. Remove from heat and let steep for 5 to 20 minutes.

2. Add tea and let steep for 5 to 10 minutes, depending on the desired strength of your tea. Be careful not to over-boil the tea, as it can cause it to become bitter. Sweeteners (sugar, maple syrup, agave etc.) can be added at this point as well.

3. Pour half of the milk into the chai mixture and simmer over low heat for 3 minutes.

4. Fill a glass with ice and top it with the remaining milk. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Use a fine mesh sieve to strain the warm chai mixture over the ice. Discard the spices and tea bag.

5. Stir and enjoy your iced chai. Add more sweetener to taste if desired.
