While it goes by many other names, including honeyberry and blue-berried honeysuckle, this bountiful berry is known as haskap in Hokkaido, meaning “many fruits on branches” in the native Ainu language. Suited to survive the harsh Hokkaido winters, this berry has been treasured for centuries as a wild crop and has been cultivated in Russia and Canada in recent years. With a powdery blue skin and deep crimson interior, it tastes like a cross between a blueberry and a raspberry. Hokkaido-harvested haskaps are combined with the perfect amount of granulated sugar and a touch of peppermint extract to make this pleasantly sweet and refreshing jam.
