This traditional Japanese snack is crunch, flavorful and addictive! Originally from the Edo Period, karinto are short cylinders of deep-fried dough, available in sweet and savory flavors. The most popular type is coated in brown sugar, giving it a deep brown appearance and crunchy sweet exterior. This award-winning karinto highlights Kumamoto prefecture’s locally grown egoma (perilla) and purple sweet potatoes. Perilla adds a slightly herbaceous flavor while purple sweet potatoes add a vibrant color and natural sweetness.
