A traditional Japanese snack from the Edo Period, karinto are short cylinders of deep-fried dough. Available in sweet and savory flavors, the most popular type is coated in brown sugar, giving it a deep brown pitted appearance and crunchy sweet exterior. Higo Seiyu’s award-winning karinto highlight Kumamoto prefecture’s produce by using locally grown egoma (perilla) and purple sweet potatoes. Perilla from the Takemichi Food Processing Association imparts a slightly herbaceous flavor while purple sweet potatoes lend the snack a vibrant color and natural sweetness, making them appealing to the eye and the stomach.
While times have changed and technology has evolved since Higo Seiyu’s founding in 1909 their passion for producing top-tier oils and goods has remained the same. Today the fourth generation of the family continues to preserve the company’s long-standing traditions while creating exciting new products. As the only JAS-certified factory in Kumamoto the Higo Seiyu is dedicated to manufacturing safe, high-quality goods for years to come.
