Although the majority of tea produced in Japan is its high-quality green tea, the country also boasts a wide range of specialty teas, both of which have been curated for you in this Care Package. We include an English brochurewhichhighlights what makes our products unique, the stories behind our local producers and their traditions, as well as brewing instructions and full color recipes.

TRADITIONAL GREEN TEAS
MOUNTAIN SENCHA GREEN TEA (りぐり茶 煎茶) (Certified Organic) Prefecture:Kochi Producer:Kunitomo Farm Ingredients:Green tea (Caffeine) Size:2 x 3g loose leaf packages
This certified organic sencha green tea is grown and cultivated by hand deep in the mountains of Shikoku Island. Known asyamacha, or mountain tea, it has a delicate sweetness and a mild astringency. The tea is quite rare given its low yield and only the tip of the shoot and its two first leaves are included.
GENMAICHA (BROWN RICE TEA) WITH MATCHA (抹茶入り玄米茶)(Certified Organic) Prefecture:Kyoto Producer:Azuma Chaen Ingredients: Green tea (sencha and matcha from Uji, Kyoto), glutinous brown rice (domestic) (Caffeine) Size:40g loose leaf
This genmaicha, or brown rice tea, is a blend of hand-roasted brown mochi rice (glutinous sticky rice), Uji green tea, which is arguably Japan’s most famous tea, andmatcha, the prized powdered tea traditionally used in the Japanese tea ceremony. The result is a savory, toasted tasting tea with sweet, earthy undertones.
Houjicha is made by roasting green tea leavesin aporcelain pot over charcoal.The leaves have a distinct earthy, reddish-brown color, resulting in a teawith a nutty, caramel-like flavor which is less bitter than other green teas. It has minimal caffeine making it a great choice even for children or before bed.
This sobacha, or buckwheat tea, is made from whole roasted buckwheat, without being crushed, to provide a full-bodied buttery and toasted nut-like flavor. It's produced in Uonuma, deep in the Snow Country of Niigata prefecture. After drinking the tea, the nutritious leftover buckwheat can also be enjoyed as a nutty porridge or on top of yogurt, or can even be eaten straight from the bag as a healthy snack.

Shell ginger, or getto, is part of the ginger family and grows in abundance in Okinawa, Japan's southernmost tropical islands. The tea has a beautiful golden brown color when steeped and carries floral and clove undertones, a subtle spicy ginger aftertaste, and has 34 times more polyphenols than red wine. Some say that it's the secret to the Okinawan's longevity!

This goishicha is a rare type of fermented tea cultivated in the mountainous region of Shikoku Island. Once harvested, the tea leaves are steamed for almost three hours in wooden barrels and then fermented twice, before being cut into squares and dried on straw mats for several days in the sun. The entire process takes nearly two months and results is a smooth, mellow tea with reduced astringency and bitterness.

Kuromamecha is a nutty, sweet tea made from roasted black soybeans known askuromame(lit. black beans) which can also be found in the traditional New Year's Day meal in Japan known asosechi ryori. Produced in Hokkaido. Japan’s northernmost prefecture, the black soybeans found in this tea are plump and flavorful producing an aromatic and gentle sweetness.
