There’s nothing more comforting than donburi (rice bowl). Donburi (from the word “don” which refers to the large bowl the dish is served in), are a complete and satisfying meal served in one delicious bowl. The ingredients are flexible, leading to unique regional and homemade varieties. 

This donburi sauce has a thick texture, soft sweetness and tastes just like what Japanese grandmothers (obaachans) would make. It combines three simple ingredients: soy sauce using white-grain soybean from Iwate Prefecture, unrefined cane sugar from Kagoshima Prefecture  and hon (true/genuine) mirin from Gifu Prefecture. 

Our producer, Yagisawa Shoten, is located in Iwate Prefecture, a large prefecture on the northeastern coast of Japan’s main island of Honshu, an area severely damaged by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. In a single moment, the earthquake completely destroyed Yagisawa Shoten’s two factories and in the end, they were left with only two trucks. With a strong commitment to reviving their livelihood, the company rebuilt and is now able to continue producing their homemade products.

Suggested uses:Try using 2tbsp in our Oyakodon (Chicken and Egg Bowl) recipe instead of the soy sauce, sugar and mirin or use any ingredients you have on hand to create your own homemade donburi (rice bowl). Can also be used in traditional Japanese dishes such as nimono (simmered vegetable and seafood), kakuni (braised pork), kinpira gobo (braised carrots and burdock), or as a substitute in recipes for soy sauce, sugar and mirin.

Great for putting together a quick meal!

This sauce is so versatile for making delicious donburis. Try it with fried eggplant, in an oyako-don, or even as a topping for an assortment of leftovers served on rice. I always keep a bottle in my fridge.
