Said to have gotten its start in a Kyoto-based confectionary during the Edo Period, this kneaded soybean flour treat has become a beloved sweet in Hokkaido. Modeled after the “shimenawa” twisted ropes at shrines, they were served at celebrations as a kind of edible good luck charms. The shelf-stable sweets gained popularity with sailors who took them on their ships and shared them at their various ports of call. When the treat arrived in Hokkaido locals realized that the area, which had plentiful soybeans and sugar, would be perfectly suited to produce them.

Today Sapporo Daichi Seika continues the tradition, crafting these twists with simple ingredients and the same timeless taste. Mixed according to an age-old recipe, a dough made of soybeans, sugar, and starch syrup is thinly rolled and cut to size before being hand-twisted by skilled craftsmen. They are then dried and carefully packaged to ensure the best possible product.
