RECIPE: Yakiniku (Japanese BBQ) Hot Sandwich (Sando)

Craving BBQ but don’t have a grill? These delicious hot sandwiches (also lovingly called sandos in Japan) capture all of the flavor of yakiniku (Japanese BBQ) but come together quickly on the stove thanks to our Vegan Yakiniku Sauce.

Servings: 2-3


Ingredients:

  • 150g (~5 oz) pork (thinly sliced)

  • ½ onion

  • 2-3 sandwich rolls or hot dog buns

  • 2-3 leaves of lettuce

  • Butter (as needed)

  • 1 Tbsp vegetable oil

  • 2 Tbsp Vegan Yakiniku (Japanese BBQ) Sauce 

  • Salt and pepper

  • Japanese pickles (optional, Amazake Light Pickle recipe included in this booklet)


Instructions:

  1. Cut the onion into thin slices. 

  2. Add vegetable oil to a frying pan and cook the thinly sliced pork and onion slices over medium-high heat. Once the pork is cooked, reduce the heat to low and add the Vegan Yakiniku (Japanese BBQ) Sauce and season with salt and pepper. Toss to coat.

  3. Butter the sandwich rolls or hot dog buns and toast if desired. Top with lettuce, prepared yakiniku meat, and optional Japanese pickles and enjoy!
