Shichimi Togarashi, or simply shichimi, translates to seven spice blend and can be sprinkled on everything from a hot bowl of noodles, to seafood and meat, salads and even cocktails to add zest and a dash of heat.
Traditional shichimi includes spicy chili peppers for heat, citrus for zest, and seaweed to add salty umami to your dishes.
Japan is home to about 50 different species of chili peppers, however, only 3% of the chili peppers used in Japan are domestic. Yohgado, the producer behind this shichimi, harvests a local chili peppers called kagawa hontaka which was the first variety to come to Japan 400 years ago. The heat from this ruby colored chili pepper doesn’t tingle, but is mellow and spreads slowly, providing a unique taste and fragrance that can’t be found outside of Japan.
Suggested uses:Sprinkle on any dish or in a bowl of noodles to add some authentic Japanese spice. Can also be used in cocktails for a little extra heat.
